No reverse gear
Officially the smallest car in the world will be put up for an auction in California on March 12th at the auction house Sotheby’s. They hope to receive somewhere from 75 to 100 thousand dollars.
This is of course a huge amount for a “car”, which is 1.3 meters (54 inches) long and powered by two-stroke 50 ccm petrol engine with an output of 4.5 horsepower. But on the other hand is one of the rare and unusual examples of the British automotive industry. Peel 50 is less than one meter (or 41 inches) wide and weights around 60 kilograms. Since it has no reverse gear, a special handle is installed on the rear part so the driver can turn it by hand. Peel 50 can travel at the top speed of around 28 miles per hour (45 kilometers per hour) and can accomodate one adult and a briefcase.
47 examples of Peel 50 produced, 26 of them survived
Peel 50 specifically comes from the Isle of Man, where it was manufactured by the company named Peel Engineering Company in the 60s of the last century. They have produced 47 examples of a car with three wheels (the rear wheel drive). Until today 26 of them survived. Peel 50 is promising to spend less than three liters of fuel per one hundred kilometers.
