From now on, Skoda vehicles are available with a completely new and technologically advanced turbo charged 1-liter petrol engine. It befits that their best-selling model Skoda Octavia is the first one to present this engine to the customers.
In general, when mentioning Skoda, people immediately think of Octavia. How not, since 1996, these models satisfied more than five million customers all around the world. For a clearer picture, 41-percent of all Skoda sales belong to Skoda Octavia. Its third generation will drive into model year 2017 a little bit refreshed, too.
Dynamic chassis control (DCC) from now on also in Skoda Octavia
In combination with more powerful engines (at least 150 HP) will henceforth be possible (for an additional charge) to order dynamic chassis control (DCC) in Octavia. The system, known from other brands under the Volkswagen roof, take care of the adjustment of the steering mechanism and the hardness of the damper.
By pressing a button, the driver can choose between three standard settings (comfort, normal and sport). The fourth position, individual, means that with driving mode select, driver can adjust the hardness of the damper, the responsiveness of the steering mechanism and the gear shift speed (in the case of automatic transmission) manually.
Some extra candies for a 2017 Skoda Octavia
Model year 2017 brings (for a surcharge) wireless or inductive smartphone charging (with optional external antenna for better reception), Skoda Phonebox. Then we have carriers for tablets on the backrests of the front seats for rear passengers. And last but not least, an umbrella (like in Superb). But not tucked away in the front door but under the front passenger seat.
Skoda Octavia 1.0 TSI – the biggest 2017 model year innovation
But without a doubt, the greatest innovation is the new, turbo charged 1-liter petrol engine, which gradually replaces the current 1.2-liter engine. So as usual, the engine is not only reduced in volume, but is also one cylinder short. Even so (and due to the aluminum structure), this engine is 16 kilograms lighter than the 1.2-liter engine and weighs around 78 kilograms. Skoda Octavia, equipped with this engine option, definitely can not be missed on the road. It sounds typically three-cylinder engine like.
But in contrast to similar engines, 1.0 TSI three-cylinder engine sound is mostly recognized at decisive acceleration. Otherwise, during normal driving, the engine surprises with extremely quiet operation. New Skoda Octavia 1.0 TSI is of course not a race car, but also not a Captain Slow. Total power of 115 “horses” and 200 Nm of torque ensures that acceleration from a standstill up to 100 kilometers per hour ends in less than ten seconds. Top speed is also absolutely exemplary, 202 kilometers per hour.
The factory specifies the fact that 4.5 liters of petrol are sufficient for 100 kilometers (8 per cent lower than that of the previous engine). During that time the atmosphere becomes heavier by 103 grams of CO2. During a short test drive, we did not exactly match the consumption specified. Anyway, with about a liter more fuel it is still a rather moderate.
Skoda Octavia 1.0 TSI price and release date
This type of engine is already possible to order in most dealerships in Europe. And the price? A little more expensive than current 1.2-liter brother, but the increment is really not big and definitely worth it. It measures in three digits (when the price is in EUR).
